For years now, we’ve been watching the same old animated shows with the same old visuals, graphics, pitches, and storylines. It’s rare to find a series that has it all – don’t you think? Well, there is one that’s relatively new and is bound to pique your interest. Care to know the name? It’s the “City of Ghosts.”
The series is a hybrid mockumentary/animated series developed by Elizabeth Ito for Netflix. Not only is the animation breathtaking, but it is also filled with countless emotions and teachable moments. The first episode of the City of Ghosts premiered on Netflix, March 5, 2021.
It is about a group of intelligent children with a deep desire to uncover mysterious stories about their city by interviewing the ghosts who live in it. Intriguing – right?
City of Ghosts is a clever, refreshing, and charming new series. It displays a unique, genuine animation style that is visually appealing and will make you want to watch the show even more. The show’s plot is very creative, and it will make you fall in love both with the story and its characters. City of Ghosts is about a group of children who are fascinated by ghosts. They decide to create a homemade show about different ghosts that haunt the city of Los Angeles. The children visit numerous places, meet new people and make new friends. The animation style of City of Ghosts is very different from that of most other shows of its kind.
The characters are animated, but the surroundings are real-world settings. This may look odd at first sight, but you will come to appreciate it over time. The series explores themes such as exploration, family, and friendship. It instils the value of creative expression in children besides the notion that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
The City of Ghosts contains four of the following characters:
Zelda (voice actor: August Nuez), a young child and the Ghost Club’s lead detective.
Thomas (voice actor: Blue Champan), a 7-year-old non-binary child who uses they/them pronouns and is a member of the Ghost Club.
Eva (voice actress: Kirikou S’hai Muldrow), a 5-year-old Ghost Club member.
Peter (voice actor: Michael Ren), a 6-year-old boy also a member of the Ghost Club.
Netflix announced the series in May 2019, with Adventure Time writer Elizabeth Ito serving as showrunner. The show’s backgrounds are based on photographs taken by Kwasi Boyd-Bouldin and then painted over at Chromosphere Studio in Los Angeles. The character animation is done by TeamTO in France.
