Mission Impossible, a spy/action film directed by Brian De Palma.

Ethan Hunt is a spy for the Impossible Missions Force. When his team members are all killed, he is framed for their deaths. Ethan will have to go dark to uncover the mole that orchestrated the whole plot.

Other cast members are John Voight, Emmanuelle Béart, Kirstin Scott-Thomas and Vanessa Redgrave.

The movie was so successful it produced the Mission: Impossible film series with other five films already released and another two in the pipeline.

Collateral

Tom Cruise in Collateral

Collateral is a 2004 action thriller. It co-stars Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Mark Ruffalo.

Max is a scrupulous taxi driver in Los Angeles whose dream is to save enough money to start his own limousine cab business.

Vincent hauls Max’s taxi and, after vetting his expertise as a driver, offers him a large sum of money to be his driver for the day.

Max realises only too late that Vincent is a hitman hired to kill all the witnesses against a mobster in his trial.

War of Worlds

War of Worlds is a 2005 sci-fi action movie directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the novel by H.G. Wells.

Ray Ferrier is a dock worker in Brooklyn, New York. Since his divorce, he has been estranged from his teenage son and preteen daughter.

One day his pregnant ex-wife drops the children down at his house to go and visit her parents.

At that point, it’s total chaos on the planet because aliens have taken over a world thought unworthy of survival and only useful for terraformation, to produce their own food.

An action-packed film with great visual effects.

Jack Reacher is a 2012 action thriller based loosely on the novel series by Lee Child.

James Barr, an ex-US Army vet, goes into a parking lot and shoots five people. He is discovered by a fingerprint left on the coin he used to gain access to the car park. The police find him sleeping placidly at home.

When he is offered the choice of death row or collaborating with the police in exchange for a life sentence, he asks for Jack Reacher, former MP officer.

When Jack begins to investigate, he realises that Barr’s involvement is very fishy.

The Last Samurai

The Last Samurai is a 2003 epic action film set in 19th century Japan.

Captain Nathan Algren is an alcoholic. He started drinking because of the guilt for the atrocities he committed during the wars against native Americans.

When he is offered to go and train the new Japanese Imperial Army to suppress the Samurai rebellion fighting against the new Emperor, he accepts for lack of money.

Once arrived in Japan, he realises the Imperial soldiers are actually conscripted peasants that know nothing of guns or fighting.

When the Samurai attack a railroad, Algren is sent to fight, although his men are not ready at all. The battle is, of course, a disaster and Algren is captured and taken prisoner by the Samurai.

Katsumoto, the head of the Samurai, takes him to his village to live among his family. While he is treated badly at first, he slowly gains the Samurai’s respect and becomes friends with Katsumoto. Algren overcomes his alcoholism and guilt and learns the Japanese language and culture.

The Firm

The Firm is a 1993 crime thriller directed by Sidney Pollack and based on the eponymous novel by John Grisham.

Mitch McDeere is on the verge of graduating from Harvard law school when he is hired by a top law firm headed by Avery Tolar.

Soon he finds out that the firm is a money-laundering firm for criminal organisations.

He will do everything he can to collect evidence and turn the firm over to the FBI.

Star cast includes Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Holly Hunter.

Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow, a sci-fi action film released in 2014, also starring Bill Paxton and Emily Blunt.

In 2015, a species of aliens called “Mimics” land in Germany and quickly conquer most of Europe.

Five years later, the United Defense Force, a global military alliance specially put together to fight the alien threat, finally manages to win a battle over the Mimics in France, using their new technological mech suits.

In Britain, the UDF plans the invasion of France, Army Major William Cage is ordered to head it. Cage has no combat experience and objects heavily to the mission, knowing it will fail. Colonel Brigham has Cage arrested and sent to a military base in London.

Cage awakens only to find Brigham has demoted him and assigned him to Sergeant Farell and the J-Squad, who do not take kindly to Cage.

As Cage predicted, the landing in France is a failure; Farell and J-Squad are quickly killed. Cage uses a mine to kill a very large blue Mimic but is wounded by the explosion and covered in the alien’s blood.

Cage suddenly awakens to find himself back in London, reliving the events of the previous morning.

Because of the blood of the alien, Cage relives the same day in a kind of time loop that will be the answer to the mechanism by which the aliens are structured.

Eyes Wide Shut

Eyes Wide Shut is a 1999 erotic psychological thriller directed by Stanley Kubrick and co-starring Nicole Kidman.

Eyes Wide Shut is an unusual film for Tom Cruise and is also the last film Kubrick directed as he died shortly afterwards.

The film is about Dr Bill Harford, a man with a seemingly stable family life. One evening, his wife Alice tells him of a sexual fantasy she had the year before, in which she would have an affair and leave him and their daughter.

Bill is shocked at the revelation and goes on a night-long adventure, during which he infiltrates a masked orgy organised by a secret society.
