Storyline

This movie is a sad romantic animated film where high school student Sakura is secretly suffering from a pancreatic disease. The line from the title- “I Want to Eat Your Pancreas”, is uttered by Sakura Yamauchi to her classmate Haruki Shiga in the library while she is sorting books out.

It’s been twelve years since that moment. Haruki, a homeroom teacher at their previous school, is assigned to rearrange the library collection.

He remembers his days with his high school friend Sakura while speaking to his students in class.

From the hospital’s waiting room, Haruki picks up a diary and discovers that his favourite classmate Sakura Yamauchi has a terminal pancreatic illness. In this novel, Sakura Yamauchi is named “Living with Dying” in her journal, where she describes how she was unable to lead a normal life at school.

Sakura Yamauchi likes Haruki because of his reaction to her secret. Sakura decides to spend the remaining time she has left with Haruki. They start hanging out and become closer. Haruki Shiga, a loner, initially rejects Sakura but slowly accepts her into his life as he keeps her secret.

During a school break, Haruki goes to Fukuoka with her friend Sakura by train. They play a truth or dare game and share a bed with each other. Sakura’s classmates and friends become sceptical of Haruki’s newfound affection.

Together the two start doing things from Sakura’s bucket list until she becomes very sick. They even sneak out to witness fireworks during her hospitalization. She invites him to lunch after her discharge, but she does not show up because on her way to meet Haruki, she gets stabbed and meets a brutal death. Haruki refuses to attend and misses her burial.

He later begs Sakura’s mother for her diary. Sakura’s mother recognizes him and shows him Sakura’s letter. The note tells him to keep the journal and have her best friend Kyoko read it because she despised Haruki. After reading the letter, Haruki bursts into tears, having never felt such anguish for a single individual.

Sakura’s mother asks what his name is. “Haruki,” he says, and she explains their names, Haruki (spring trees) and Sakura (cherry blossom).

After reading the diary, Kyoko, who denies Sakura ever lied to her, flees. Haruki chases after her, asking Kyoko to be his friend as a tribute to Sakura.

A year later, Haruki and Kyoko, now friends, visit Sakura’s grave.
