Brad Pitt shines in the role of team manager and is supported by a fantastic cast, which includes Robin Wright and Jonah Hill.

Billy Beane is the general manager of the Oakland Athletics baseball team who has just lost the eliminations game to the Yankees. Knowing his best players will leave the team and that there is not enough budget to buy new good ones, Billy has to devise a way to make it. Peter Brand is an economics graduate from Yale who proposes finding unlikely players solely based on statistical data analysis.

2. THE ROOKIE (2002)

Starring the great Dennis Quaid, The Rookie is a family-friendly, feel-good underdog baseball movie about following your dreams and never giving up.

Jim Morris is forced to leave Minor League baseball after a career-ending injury. He is now a husband, father, chemistry teacher and coach of the school team. To motivate him and the team, he is offered the opportunity to play in the major League if this team makes it to state.

3. THE NATURAL (1984)

The fantastic cast of The Natural includes many big names like Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, Kim Basinger, and many more. Written by Robert Towne, a Columbia Pictures story editor, it tells the story of Roy Hobbs, an astounding young hitter who sets out to try for the Chicago Cubs.

Unfortunately, his dreams are demolished by a mad woman who shoots him in the abdomen. After 16 years, he gets signed up as a rookie for a team in last place. Although he is considered too old, he will turn the fate of the team around and drive them to success.

4. A-LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (1992)

A-League of Their Own follows the all-girls professional baseball Major League team, formed during World War II when most male professional baseball players were drafted to serve. The film stars all-time favourites like Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, and Madonna (who even has a little singing scene).

When Major League Baseball is about to shut down because of the war, the owner of the Chicago Cubs has the idea of putting together a league of all women to temporarily substitute the official men’s one. The first to be recruited is Dottie, played by Geena Davis, along with other key players such as Mae Mordabito, played by Madonna. In the beginning, the league doesn’t get much attention, but their unconventional playing, skill and motivation will win the hearts of everyone.

5. 42 (2013)

The true story of Jackie Robinson in one of the great baseball movies.

42 is another biopic about Jackie Robinson, who was the first black player in the MLB who started in the Minor League and made it to success in the Major League. The film stars Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson and Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team manager who recruits Robinson to the MLB.

This movie is well worth checking out because not only does it celebrate an important milestone in American sports history and the personal life and struggle against racism of Jackie Robinson, but it also features some epic baseball scenes!

6. THE BAD NEWS BEARS (1976)

The Bad News Bears is a great commedy about a little league team.

The Bad News Bears is a classic sports comedy about a highly rag-tag children’s league baseball team. They’re terrible, and their losing streak turns into a winning one when Walter Matthau, as alcoholic Morris Buttermaker, becomes their coach and enrols two extremely good girl players!

Even though this movie was made in the 1970s, it still holds up today, especially because it is all about having fun and not letting competitiveness get in the way of the true nature of sports.

7. THE PHENOM (2016)

The Phenom is a sports movie drama about Major League player Hopper Gibson Jr, played by Johnny Simmons. After throwing five wild pitches in a row on national television, Hopper is sent to a psychologist for therapy. Dr Mobley is played by Paul Giamatti. The therapy leads to uncovered traumas because of Hopper’s abusive father, Hopper Gibson Sr, played by Ethan Hawke.

8. FIELD OF DREAMS (1989)

Kevin Costner, Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones are among the stars of one of the best movies about baseball.

It is a good baseball movie, this movie is based on the novel by W.P Kinsella and tells the story of Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner), a farmer in Iowa, who hears a voice telling him to “build it, and they will come.” He interprets this message as an input to building a baseball field in his backyard. When he does plough down a considerable space in his corn field, almost bringing his farm to bankruptcy, dead players of the past start coming to play on it, among which his father, John Kinsella.

Field of Dreams is a beautiful movie that will bring tears to your eyes whether you’re a baseball fan or not.

9. THE SANDLOT (1993)

The Sandlot

The Sandlot is a classic coming-of-age story about the summer of ‘62 when a nerdy ten-year-old named Scotty goes to live in the San Fernando Valley, where it is hard for him to make friends. He manages to befriend a group of kids who play baseball in a local plot, albeit being ashamed of his incapacity to play. He even asks his stepfather, Bill, to teach him, but all he gets is a black eye. However, he is accepted into the group and Benny, the best player in the group teaches him to play.

One day their ball goes over the fence and into a backyard. Scotty heads to retrieve it but is stopped by the others, who tell him that a “huge, gigantic, and very ferocious” dog lives there and collects all the balls that end up in his yard. Mr Mertle, its owner, is even more ferocious apparently.

After various vicissitudes, the friends are seen to have grown up and taken different paths in life, but with a tender memory of their past.

10. BULL DURHAM (1988)

Bull Durham stars Kevin Costner as Crash Davis and Tim Robbins as Ebby La Loosh. The film also stars Susan Sarandon as Annie Savoy.

Crash, a veteran player on his way out, gets hired by a Minor League baseball team to educate Ebby La Loosh, who has a great arm but a ‘small head’.

Annie Savoy, a teacher and great baseball fanatic, does her best to educate Ebby and chooses him as her lover for that baseball season.

Crash convinces Ebby to follow his teaching, while Annie widens his cultural experience. The team begins to win, and in the end, Ebby will make it to a big team in the Major League. Of course, this means the end for Crash, who is sacked. He will end the season with his personal record of home runs to become a coach and with the love and comfort of Annie.

11. SUGAR (2008)

Great sports movies are all about great players such as Miguel "Sugar" Santos.

Miguel is quite a renowned baseball player back home in the Dominican Republic. He has a good and loving family he visits and provides for. When he masters the unbeatable knuckle curveball, he gets invited to the USA to play in the Kansas City Royals.

But his problems with inclusion in a community where he hardly speaks the language and where everyone is so competitive and unforgiving eventually take their toll on him. When the only other player and friend from his country of origin is fired, Miguel starts to plunder into a depressing analysis of the world around him.

Take Me Out To The Ball Game is a baseball musical that stars Frank Sinatra, Esther Williams, and Gene Kelly. A classic all’s-well-that-ends-well film of the time that will keep you and the whole family joyfully entertained.

Eddie O’Brien and Dennis Ryan are two players and vaudeville artists who play in the Chicago Wolves. When a woman buys the team, love stories change the balance between the two players, and the plot thickens when gangsters attempt to get Eddie thrown out of the team so they can win a bet.
