After years of trying, Netflix has finally decided that in 2023 they will begin a crackdown on password sharing. Netflix password sharing has been occurring for years, but the streaming giant has finally decided to take action.

Instead of blocking accounts, Netflix has introduced an additional fee that people in the UK can pay in order to let an Extra member outside of the household of the account holder. So it is still possible to share Netflix with friends and family members. You just have to pay a bit more to share the password.

How Much Does a Netflix Account Cost in 2023?

Netflix users can choose from four different plans when signing up for a Netflix account. These are intended for use by one household only. Netflix defines a household as people living in one house. Choose from:

The Standard Plan with Adverts costs £4.99 per month.

This plan is fully ad-supported and lets you watch all but a few movies and TV shows on your Netflix account. Video play is in full HD on two supported devices simultaneously.

The Standard Plan costs £10.99 per month.

This plan is an ad-free plan that gives you unlimited access to all of the content on Netflix. Download and watch Netflix in full HD on two supported devices at once.

The Premium Plan costs £15.99 per month.

On this plan you get unlimited, ad-free access to all content on the streaming service. Watch in Ultra HD on up to four devices simultaneously, and download content onto up to six devices at once. You can even choose to use Netflix spatial audio with your Premium Netflix account.

Which Netflix Plans Can You Share With People Outside of Your Household?

Due to Netflix’s crackdown, you can no longer share with users living outside of your Netflix household. It is possible to watch from a holiday home or from outside the UK. When abroad the content might be different to that in the same country as your account is registered.

One of the new features that was introduced during the crackdown, is the change to add an extra member slot to your subscription. This is for people living outside of your primary location.

The Standard plan + 1 Extra costs £15.98 and lets you add one person outside your household;

The Premium plan + 1 Extra costs £20.98 and lets you add one person outside your household;

The Premium plan + 2 Extras costs £25.97 and lets you add two people outside your household.

What Is the Netflix Password Sharing Crackdown?

In 2023, after a trial period in Latin America, Netflix brought in new rules as part of its password-sharing policy. These will regulate password sharing. More practically it means every time you open a new session ID you will be asked to supply a verification code.

There is the option for people who have been sharing to create their own personal accounts. In order for them not to lose their viewing history and retain other settings such as selected captions on their profile, they are able to select “transfer profile and manage access”, and import their own profile into a new account.

How Does Netflix Know if People are Account Sharing?

Netflix has sent almost four million British subscribers a letter identifying them as sharing accounts outside their household and letting them know that their account is for use by one household. So how does the streaming giant know when you are sharing an account?

Well, the streaming company uses IP addresses device IDs, and account activity from devices signed in, to locate which users form one household.
